Weather Decisions & Communication
Our goal is always to play baseball whenever it’s safe to do so.
Weather in Kingston can change quickly, and we make every effort to communicate
cancellations or delays by 4:00 PM on game days.
However, please note:
-
Kingston Thunder is run entirely by a small group of volunteers
— all of whom have full‑time jobs, families, and responsibilities outside the league.
-
Because of this, it is not always possible for us to make or post a decision by exactly 4:00 PM.
-
On days where the weather is borderline or rain hasn’t started yet,
we may wait past 4:00 PM to make the most accurate call and give teams the best chance to play.
-
As soon as a decision is made, we will post it on our official channels: Website, Facebook, and X.
Please do not email, message, or DM the league asking if games are cancelled.
We promise: if we know, you will know. We post updates immediately once a decision is finalized.
Thunder Weather Guidelines
Lightning: If lightning is seen or thunder is heard, play stops immediately.
Everyone must clear the field and dugout.
Play may resume only after 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning/thunder.
Heavy Rain / Field Conditions:
Games may be cancelled if fields become unsafe due to standing water,
slippery surfaces, or ongoing heavy rain.
We work closely with the City of Kingston and monitor field conditions throughout the day.
Heat: On extreme heat days, coaches should ensure players stay hydrated,
take shade breaks, and monitor for signs of heat stress.
Games may be shortened or paused if conditions become unsafe.
Air Quality: If air quality reaches levels considered unsafe for youth sports,
games may be cancelled or modified.
Umpire & Executive Authority
Our Thunder executive makes all weather‑related decisions prior to first pitch.
Once the game begins, umpires have full authority
to pause or stop play if conditions become unsafe at any point.
In addition, any Thunder executive member on site
may also pause or stop a game if weather or field conditions change suddenly.
We typically have an executive member at the park
during game nights to support umpires and ensure player safety.
Where to Find Updates
All weather‑related announcements will be posted on:
If it’s not posted, it means a decision has not been made yet.
